Practice News Story 3: Crime

LDS Church Burglarized
Danny Robinson

Sometime after 2 a.m. yesterday morning a meetinghouse of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 1600 East and 900 North in Logan was burglarized.
Bob Knotz, manager of the church Physical Management Department, arrived first on the scene around 6 a.m. yesterday morning. Knotz manages the physical aspect of 4 other church buildings, and was hoping to get an early start on replacing some ceiling tiles in the meetinghouse. When he arrived he noticed something strange, the outer door to the building which is normally locked, was already opened. As Knotz walked in he noticed two shattered computer monitors lying on the floor. “It was obvious something was wrong” Knotz said “I immediately called the police”.

Sherriff Deputy Geoffrey Hasty, of the Logan City Sheriff’s Department responded to the call. Deputy Hasty told us that there were at least two individuals involved in the crime. One suspect found a way into the building thru an open window located in the church’s Bishops Office, then unlocked one of the outside doors to let an accomplice in. The window the suspect entered through was left open the night before by Bishop Larry Shirk, the Bishop of the congregation. Bishop Shirk had opened the window as he finished some late meetings with members of his congregation, to listen to the rain outside. When it came time for Shirk and his counselor to check windows, doors, and lock up the building (around 11 p.m.), his office window went unchecked. “This is my fault”, Shirk said, “I left the window open”. Shirk went on to say, “I’m just glad nobody was in the building, these may have been very desperate individuals”.

Evelyn Breathwaite, whose home is directly behind the church , said she was woken up by the sound of breaking glass around 2:20 a.m. but had dismissed the noise for a garbage truck and went back to sleep. Mrs. Breathwaite has lived in her home for over 50 years, and says she has never known anything like this to happen. “The church is here to do good, to have things stolen from a charity type organization is a horrible thing”.

According to Deputy Hasty, two CPU’s were stolen out of the bishop’s office; the monitors to those computers were left broken close to one of the doors where Knotz found them. Between the damage of the monitors and the taking of the two computers, it’s estimated that a value over $600 was lost. Police are optimistic about finding the perpetrators. Through what Hasty calls “ample fingerprints” and the use of the departments K-9 units the police already have suspects. “We have two persons of interest at this time” Hasty said, “but we are not yet releasing names”.

Practice News Story 2: Fire

Ogden restaurant/apartment fire

Yesterday afternoon a fire broke out at Pedro’s restaurant on Washington Blvd in Ogden and spread to apartments above the restaurant. According to Deputy Fire Chief Greg Chamberlain the fire dept. received the call around 2:00 yesterday afternoon, and the department had the fire put out within an hour. The fire started in the kitchen of the restaurant and spread through the rest of the building. All together five people were in the building all escaped with only minor injuries. Deputy Chief Chamberlain said, "I’m just glad we got everybody out", he continued, "Even thought the building is a total loss, It’s human life that’s important, so I would consider this a success".

Two of the people inside were in Pedros Restaurant, one customer and the owner of the Restaurant Pedro Gonzales. Pedro has been in business here for almost two years, and says he was cooking in the kitchen when the fire he was cooking with, spread onto some grease, creating a grease fire. "I grabbed the extinguisher and tried to put it out but I couldn’t put it out fast enough". Pedro then yelled for the customer in the restaurant to call for some help, that’s when the fire dept. was notified. Pedro suffered burns on his hands and was treated at Mckay-Dee Hospital.

The other three people in the building ; Pedro’s brother Miguel and Miguels two daughters 4 and 2 upstairs in an apartment. All escaped with only slight smoke inhalation.
The owner of the building Rachael Calhoon said " I’m just glad everyone’s able to walk away from this". She said the building will likely be re-built and Pedros Restaurant will be back.

Accident PNS #1

Field Trip Van Crash Kills Seven USU Students and Instructor
Danny Robinson

Earlier today on Interstate 84 west of Tremonton, a large passenger van carrying 10 Utah State University Agriculture students and their instructor, lost control, and rolled multiple times ejecting all passengers from the vehicle.

The group of students was on a field trip, as part of Ag week at Utah State. The van they were in was part of a caravan of vehicles traveling along I-84. Kyle Holden, a friend of many of the students and a former student of the instructor driving the van, was part of the caravan, driving his own personal vehicle. Kyle spoke to reporters at a press conference this morning. Kyle stated that he was driving along side of the van at the time of the accident. Kyle looked over at the instructor driving the van, he said “I saw smoke from the back area, his (the driver) face changed like he had to gain control”. He later added, “It looked like the tire exploded”. Kyle then described the van swerving out of control and rolling multiple times, throwing the students and instructor from the vehicle. “These were my friends”, Kyle said… “I can’t believe this is even happening,…It’s hard to talk about”.

The exact cause to the crash is still under investigation. Officer Jason Jensen of the Utah Highway Patrol, was patrolling Interstate 84, traveling only half a mile behind the van at the time of the crash, and was the first officer on scene. Officer Jensen described the condition of the van as “absolutely destroyed” when he arrived, with all passengers outside of the van having been ejected. All of the passengers were male. Officer Jensen called for medical personnel, and said that the medics arrived within 5 minutes. Two Life Flight units were dispatched to carry some of the passengers to Ogden Regional Hospital, while others were taken to a hospital in Brigham City. Officer Jensen told reporters that the local police department is currently investigating the crash, which could take a few months, with the federal investigation taking closer to a year.

Stan Albright, President of Utah State University also spoke at the press conference this morning. “This is a great tragedy four our University” President Albright said, “We are in the middle of contacting family”, of the students involved, stating also that the names of the students would all be released at the same time, as soon as all of the family were contacted. President Albright did however release the name of the driver of the van, as being Evan Parker an Agriculture department instructor, and that parker as well as seven of the students have been pronounced dead. Six of them were pronounced dead at the scene and two were said to be dead on arrival at the hospital, with the remaining three of the eleven passengers listed as being in critical condition. President Albright said that memorial services will be planned and held at the University.
